    Hello, my name is Hanan Khan. At first you might think that I am Indian because of my last name KHAN. Well, yes, my ancestors are from India, but I was born and raised in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I came to the United States Of America in 2015 as an International Student, and I am still an International Student. During last year, the year of dooms days of quarantine, and Covid scare. I have been encouraged by the presence of the strong women in my current school, Mount Holyoke College, to embrace who I am. I have come out to my family as a lesbian during 2020. Which was both liberating and terrifying.
2020 was not the best year for so many people. But for me it was the year that I connected with myself more than any other year. Yes, it was gross full of fear, isolation, and unemployment, but this helped me to really connect with my core soul, real desire, and understanding my own sexuality.

​I have found that I was conforming to society’s norm of what women should do, or whom a woman should be with. And I was raised to believe a woman should be with a man no other option was available this was drilled in me by society, religion, parents, and peers’ friends. 

​ I have come out to my family, but I am still new to the LGBTQ community. I would love to have the flag of pride shine on my head. I love Rainbows colors. I would wear it with Pride because I earned it. I had to leave everyone I know behind to earn my Pride. I was rejected by my own mother to earn it. And I am pretty sure society will not accept me in Saudi for being a lesbian, but you know what I am happy to have found my identity last year. I own it to myself to celebrate the PRIDE I earned with all the confidence in me the flad will shie because my soul has the prober home for it now. My body and soul are finally unified. I am Gay and proud!!

The safety of our staff and our customers is essential to us, so we have:
  • Cleaned and/or disinfected all surfaces and implements
  • Laundered and/or disinfected all capes, towels and linens
  • Initiated contactless methods of scheduling and payment
  • Acquired appropriate personal protective equipment for stylists and clients
  • Discontinued the practice of hand shaking and other non-essential contact
  • Re-trained our staff on essential infection control, hand hygiene practices and have received certification from Barbicide, the industry's leader in sanitation and disinfection.
To further assure your safety, as we as ours, the following procedures will be implemented:
  • All appointments must be booked in advance. Double-bookings will be avoided at all costs, so last-minute requests will be unlikely to accommodate.
  • In order to ensure a safe capacity in the salon, we must ask that clients not bring guests to the salon who are not actively receiving services. We understand that this will likely create inconvenience, particularly with parents with small children, but it is not only for our safety and yours, but your children's.
  • Temperatures will be taken and recorded at the beginning of every appointment. Anyone with a raised temperature, who has been feeling unwell within 24 hours prior, or shows sign of unless in the salon will be asked to reschedule their appointment.
  • All services will include a shampoo at the beginning of every appointment, including clipper cuts.
  • All clients will be provided with a Personal Protection kit. Until we are advised it is safe, all individuals in the salon will be required to wear a provided mask.

We desperately want to return to the way things used to be. But, until then, our first priority is your safety. Please be patient with us while we journey with you back to normal.

Many of you may have seen, from us or in the news, the announcement of Mary Roman's passing. Mary became a regular of hours, coming in for a shampoo, blow out and set or the occasional haircut, almost once a week. We were not surprised that she did not come in last week, given that she was 83, though hardly a frail woman. She was still an active track & field competitor, and the last time we spoke, we lamented that the hair show I was supposed to attend, and the track meet she was supposed to attend in New Orleans, were both cancelled as concerns around the virus grew.

What we didn't know was that her absence was due to a sudden hospitalization last Sunday. She had contracted coronavirus, and was diagnosed with COVID19. And then, we got word online that she had passed away on Monday night.

Given the circumstances with stay-at-home, restrictions against gatherings, and Mary's wishes, the family is faced with unusually high fees with regards to the handling of her remains and funeral costs. We called Michael, her son with whom she lived, to see what we could do to help, and he said the biggest burden right now are those expenses. So, we started a GoFundMe page for Mary.

​Even though we cannot perform services on clients, there are several services we can provide:
  • Hand Sanitizer Available for Shipping or Curbside Pick Up/Delivery:
  • Emergency Root Touch Up & Glaze Home Kits:
    • ​For our Color clients, we will be putting together Emergency Root Touch Up & Glaze kits for you to be able to touch up your roots around your face and part line.
      • This service is only being offered during the COVID-19 stay-at-home period, and once our doors are open again, this service will no longer be offered.
    • Each kit will include:
      • The exact amount of color & developer/processing liquid required for your application
      • A pair of gloves
      • A shampoo & conditioner
      • Applicators for your touch up
        • A tint bowl & brush for root touch ups
        • A squeeze bottles for reglazing
      • A one-on-one Skype/FaceTime session with me while you apply your product so I can guide you through the process
      • For the first 10 to pre-order a kit, a bonus moisturizing treatment
    • Kits will be between $40-$50 depending on the amount of product required for your touch up application service
    • We will be setting up pick up/delivery dates starting this Friday, March 27. We are simply waiting for some of the supplies required

  • Wig, Sheitel and Hairpiece Services:
    • Services will include color, washing, setting, styling, repair, re-volumizing
      • Due to the need to fit the wig on your head, we cannot provide wig-cutting services at this time. We can prepare your wig in all other ways and cut it once we are off stay-in-place orders
    • ​We have been approved to continue to provide wig and hairpiece services
      • All consultations must be done remotely, via internet or phone
      • We will arrange either curbside pick up/delivert from your home, curbside drop off/pick-up at the salon, or you can mail us your wig and a self-addressed, pre-paid label for return shipping
      • Wigs will be serviced, sanitized, and placed in a sealed plastic bag

  • Complimentary One-On-One and Group Personalized Web Sessions:

WE ARE OPEN AMIDST THE COVID-19/CORONAVIRUS CRISIS... so a brief breakdown and then the SPECIAL EVENTS (read this email to the end!)

In order to remain open, and protect our precious clientele, we are engaged in and maintaining sanitation standards above and beyond regulations to ensure the safety of everyone.

The following precautions are being taken:

  • IN SALON HYGIENE
    • We will wear gloves and/or sanitize our hands before and after handling cash or cards at reception and washing hair.
    • We will be refraining from hand shaking and greeting clients with hugs or kisses. Please know that we still love you very much, so please accept a good elbow rub as temporary substitute.
    • We will be washing hands and/or using hand sanitizer in between client contact and in between the use of shared tools such as straighteners and blowdryers.
    • We will wipe down our phones and all door handles and shared surfaces will be disinfected and wiped on an hourly basis.
    • All staff are advised to self-isolate at home if they experience any symptoms such as fever, coughing or breathlessness. 
  • CLIENTS
    • Please cancel or reschedule your appointment if you have come into contact with anyone who has symptoms or are experiencing symptoms yourself.
    • We ask that when you have an appointment, please do not bring guests with you. If you are bringing a child over the age of 10 for an appointment, please remain during the consultation, and once we are on the same page, we ask that you return once your child's appointment is done. If your child is under 10, please have a seat as directed during the appointment itself.
    • Please take advantage of our hand sanitizer upon arrival.
    • Our Complimentary Beverage Bar will remain available, and disposable cups will be provided if requested. We ask that you refrain from bringing outside food and beverages in the salon.

We continue to monitor advice, along with guidance from the Departments of Health and the World Health Organization and will provide further updates as the situation continues to evolve. The entire team is continuously working to protect the salon and people and we appreciate your continued support in these efforts.

Given the school and work closures, we know it is going to be hard in the coming weeks. Let us help you out!

In addition to regular hours, we will be hosting some Special Events for small groups to allow you to get some pampering, do something with the family, and get out of the house in a safe fashion.

Some of our INCREDIBLE clients & staff are giving back, and we want to help! Therefore, we have chosen THREE charities for whom we are accepting donations this year. Donate ANY amount to any of the three in-salon, and you get a snowflake that you will  sign, and we will hang in the window. Our goal is to have a BLIZZARD of snowflakes!

The charities are as follows:
  1. Fostering Love, CT: Founded by foster parents & YBR clients, Mark and Brianna Regentz, their mission is to provide, among other things, care packages for children when first entering foster care.
  1. Norwalk Marching Band: With a member of the Norwalk High School Bears Marching Band and his mom as clients, and a supporter of music in high schools, it was only natural that YBR support these local teens!
  2. Highest Hopes Foundation: As you know, owner Rica, and her daughter/apprentice, Ari, are both big fans of Panic! At The Disco. Last year, P!ATD established this foundation created to support the efforts of non-profit organizations that lead, develop, and advocate support for human rights.

New Payment Options & Online Booking Process

We are thrilled to launch, as the first of three US-based salons, a new and secure online booking process with Shedul, our booking software!

  • In-Salon, you now have two options for credit card processing. We will continue to take credit cards using PayPal, but we also have the option for you to register a card with us. The way it works is at checkout, you will be texted a link to a secure site. You then enter your credit card information and like other major retailers, like Amazon, you will have a credit card stored for future transactions. All you need to do is at it once, and you're all set!
  • Online bookings now require you to enter your credit card. When you need to check out at the end of your appointment, we can automatically bill the credit card you entered when you made your appointment!

NORWALK, Conn. - Feb. 28, 2019 - PRLog -- Stylists from Yaffa Beauty by Rica provided free haircuts to homeless men and women at a warming center in Rockland County, NY, Tuesday evening, February 26.

Owner & Lead Stylist, Rica Mendes, has been working with this group since 2017 through the Reform Temple of Rockland's school and youth group. Mendes has worked their as an educator and school assistant for several years, and when the students began volunteering for the warming center, she began offering her services as a cosmetologist.

​"What I do, as a stylist, is defined by something I learned while studying at Paul Mitchell the School - that I'm a day-maker. Or, as a popular internet meme reads, 'Stylists touch more hearts than hair.'" Mendes continues, I find that it's not even the end result of the cut that makes the difference, it's when these people, who often feel forgotten or invisible, are touched by another human being and treated with dignity. I want my students to see each individual as an individual, worthy of respect. I want to give the people we volunteer for the opportunity to tell their stories, know that they are being heard, and that they are cared for. And it's important that my students see that, and it reminds me and my colleague to be grateful and humble. Someone once pointed out that we are all just 7 paychecks away from being homeless."

Mendes brought team member, Jessica Xhuti, of Watertown, CT, with her across the Governor Mario Cuomo Bridge into Rockland County to join her. "I really enjoy doing this. I like to meet new people and learning their back history, what they've been through," as Xhuti explains why she is willing to drive 2 hours each way for this event. "I like to give back because not everyone has the same opportunities as I do, and I don't want to take anything for granted. So, the 2-hour drive is nothing to me in comparison." Xhuti is a four-time veteran of providing cuts for the homeless.

Between the two stylists, Yaffa Beauty by Rica attended to and pampered over a dozen individuals Tuesday night. Continuting to give back, Yaffa Beauty by Rica will be shaving heads at O'Neill's Irish Pub's St. Baldrick's Fundraiser from 3-7:30 on Saturday, March 9, 2019.
